Analog FPV is cheap, low-latency and works with any 5.8 GHz analog transmitter, but the picture is grainy. Digital systems such as DJI, Walksnail Avatar and HDZero give far clearer video; the goggles and the drone's video transmitter must use the same system. In the US, recreational FPV pilots must pass the TRUST test, register drones over 250 grams and fly with a visual observer.
Goggles are the most important FPV purchase, and they lock you into a video system. Choose the system first.

What to check in goggles
- Video system and supported air units
- Screen type and field of view
- Interpupillary distance (IPD) and focus or diopter adjustment
- DVR recording
- Weight, battery and fit with glasses
Radio and receiver
Your radio link is separate from video. See RC radio protocols for ExpressLRS, Crossfire and others.
Rules in the US
- Pass the free TRUST test for recreational flying.
- Register drones over 250 grams and display the number.
- Drones that must be registered need Remote ID, built in or by module.
- Keep visual line of sight; for FPV, use a visual observer.
- Analog 5.8 GHz video transmitters above low power are typically operated under amateur radio rules, which require a license.

Common questions
Is analog FPV still worth it?
For budget builds, tiny whoops and racing with mixed equipment, yes. It is cheap, and almost every analog VTX is compatible.
Can DJI goggles work with Walksnail or HDZero?
No. Each digital system needs its own matching video transmitter and goggles.
Do I need a license to fly FPV?
US recreational pilots need the TRUST certificate. Running analog video transmitters above low power typically requires an amateur radio license.
Can I fly FPV alone?
FAA rules require visual line of sight, so recreational FPV flights need a visual observer who can see the drone.
