RC Rock Crawler Buying Guide: Scales, Axles and Must-Have Specs

Choose an RC rock crawler: 1/24 to 1/6 scale, portal vs straight axles, RTR vs kit, servo torque, tires and waterproofing, for beginners and trail drivers.

Quick answer

Most beginners should start with a 1/10 scale ready-to-run crawler or trail truck: big enough for real terrain, with the widest choice of parts. Small 1/24 and 1/18 crawlers suit indoor courses and tight budgets. Check axle type, servo torque, waterproof electronics, tire compound and whether the battery and charger are included. Plan for a steering servo upgrade, the most common first change.

Crawling is slow, technical and addictive. The right first crawler is capable out of the box and easy to upgrade.

Pick a scale

Scale Where it shines Notes
1/24 Indoor courses, desks Cheap, small parts
1/18 Backyard and indoor Good middle ground
1/10 Rocks and trails Largest parts and community
1/6 Big terrain Expensive, heavy

Crawler or trail truck

Comp-style crawlers are built for rock obstacles: low gearing, flexible suspension and sticky tires. Trail trucks look like scale vehicles and are built for long, varied drives. Many owners want something in between.

Specs that matter

Spec Look for
Axles Portal for clearance; straight for simplicity
Steering servo Metal gear, high torque rating
Motor Brushed is fine; sensored brushless is smoothest. See motors
Transmission Two-speed or overdrive options on some models
Waterproofing Water-resistant ESC, servo and receiver
Tires Soft compound with good foams
Parts support Local hobby shop and online availability

Ready to run or kit

Ready-to-run (RTR) models come assembled with electronics. Kits teach you how the truck works and let you choose electronics, but cost more once complete. Either way, confirm what is in the box: battery, charger and radio.

Battery

Most 1/10 crawlers run on 2S or 3S LiPo; read our LiPo guide before you charge.

Common questions

What scale RC crawler is best for beginners?

1/10 scale is the most popular. It handles real rocks and trails, and parts are easy to find.

Are portal axles better than straight axles?

Portal axles add ground clearance and reduce torque twist. Straight axles are simpler and often more scale-realistic.

Do RTR crawlers include batteries?

Some do, many do not. Check the box for battery and charger before you buy.

What should I upgrade first on a crawler?

Usually the steering servo, then tires and weights. A stronger servo makes the biggest difference on rocks.
